How to create value with multi-benefit everyday nutrition

Consumers increasingly expect more from the products they choose – more nutrition, more functionality and more value without compromising on taste or convenience. For food and beverage manufacturers, this is opening up new opportunities to rethink familiar categories. Coffee is one particularly interesting example. A cold coffee drink can be more than an indulgent refreshment: with the right dairy ingredients and formulation expertise, it can also become a high protein, nutritionally differentiated product designed for modern lifestyles.

For food and beverage manufacturers, the opportunity lies not only in identifying emerging consumer needs, but in turning them into products that combine nutrition, functionality, convenience and great taste.

So where are the most interesting opportunities for product innovation right now? Three areas stand out.

  1. Give familiar drinks a high protein upgrade

Protein continues to be one of the strongest drivers of food and nutrition innovation: 58% of consumers globally say they actively seek protein in their diet1. At the same time, active nutrition is moving beyond traditional sports products into more everyday eating and drinking occasions.

This creates room to rethink familiar beverages.

Take coffee. By combining a familiar format with high-quality dairy protein, manufacturers can create products that connect indulgence, convenience and nutrition in one proposition.Valio’s dairy ingredient portfolio includes solutions designed for high protein applications, including drinks and powders. Valio Eila® protein solutions can support higher protein and lactose free dairy products while contributing to a full-bodied taste and smooth texture.Coffee drinks are a good example of how several benefits can come together in one familiar format. Valio’s coffee drink applications demonstrate opportunities ranging from high protein to no added sugar and lactose free solutions for digestive wellness. Everyday convenience is combined with added nutritional and functional value.

  1. Bring recovery into everyday nutrition

Recovery is no longer relevant only to athletes. As active nutrition becomes part of broader wellbeing, consumers are increasingly interested in products that support active lifestyles and everyday recovery.Dairy ingredients offer interesting opportunities in this space, particularly through high-quality protein and convenient drink formats. Valio’s recovery drink concept demonstrates how nutrition expertise can be translated into a practical, appealing application for modern lifestyles.

  1. Rethink indulgence without losing the experience

Nutrition is not only reshaping functional beverages. It is also influencing traditionally indulgent categories.Sugar reduction is becoming an important area of product development as manufacturers look for ways to improve nutritional profiles while protecting the sensory experience consumers expect.

Valio’s ingredient portfolio includes solutions for sugar reduction across dairy and beverages, yogurts, confectionery and ice cream. Its commercial offering combines nutritional and functional expertise with application support to help manufacturers develop products with a full-bodied taste and appealing texture.

From an ingredient into a product opportunity

The common thread across these opportunities is that ingredients alone are rarely enough. Manufacturers need to understand what consumers are looking for, choose ingredients that can deliver against those needs, solve formulation questions and ultimately create a product that works both technically and commercially. This is where Valio’s approach goes beyond supplying dairy ingredients. Its expertise spans nutrition, dairy science and application development, helping customers move from an emerging opportunity towards a tangible product concept.

For manufacturers exploring opportunities across optimised nutrition, permissible indulgence and early life nutrition, the question is therefore not simply which trend to follow, but how to turn changing needs into products that create real consumer and commercial value.
