Food Manufacturers Turn to Dry Steam Cleaning to Strengthen Allergen Control and Reduce Cross-Contamination Risks

As food and beverage processors continue to face increasing scrutiny around allergen management and food safety, effective cleaning and sanitation practices remain critical to preventing allergen cross-contamination and protecting consumers.

Food allergies affect millions of consumers across Europe, and undeclared allergens continue to be a significant cause of food recalls and product withdrawals. For food and beverage processors, even trace amounts of allergenic ingredients can lead to costly recalls, production disruption, and damage to brand reputation.

Dry steam cleaning can provide the food and drink sector with an effective solution for removing residues from production equipment and supporting allergen-control programmes.

“The consequences of allergen cross-contamination can be severe for both consumers and food and beverage processors,” said Evan Reyes, Goodway Technologies Vice President, Global Food and Beverage. “Facilities need cleaning methods that can help reach difficult areas, remove residues effectively and support overall sanitation objectives.”

Dry steam cleaning uses high-temperature, low-moisture steam to clean equipment and surfaces while limiting water consumption. The technology can be particularly useful for facilities seeking to minimise moisture around equipment, accelerate cleaning processes, and access areas that can be difficult to clean with conventional methods.

Potential food and beverage applications include:

  • Product changeovers
  • Conveyor cleaning
  • Bakery operations
  • Ingredient handling areas
  • Packaging equipment
  • Dry food manufacturing environments
  • Processing equipment and production lines

As food and beverage processors work to meet regulatory requirements, customer expectations, and retailer requirements, sanitation programmes increasingly focus on risk reduction throughout the production process.

“Allergen management requires more than a single solution,” said Reyes. “Facility maintenance personnel need a combination of effective sanitation practices, employee awareness, production controls, and verification measures. Dry steam cleaning can play a valuable role within that broader food safety strategy.”

With manufacturers continually seeking ways to improve efficiency while maintaining the highest food safety standards, dry steam cleaning offers an approach that can help facilities enhance cleaning performance while reducing water usage and supporting allergen-control objectives.
